Homeless Mission

Day of Hospitality at Bethel of Woods Hole
The mission of Bethel of Woods Hole to the homeless began with
small gatherings at the NOAH homeless shelter in Hyannis, Massachusetts.
The project was greatly expanded during the years of 1997-2005 when our
pastor Bob Huff served as director of Daystar Place, a day program for the
homeless and others in need at The Salvation Army Center in Hyannis.
A new project called The Campus for Human Development was undertaken, based
upon the principles of equality, dignity and respect for all persons. Workshops
were established to help people to break out of often repeating cycles of
discouragement, isolation, and alcoholism. We believe that regardless of
present circumstances, everyone can turn their situation around and find
self respect and meaning in their life.
In addition to the weekday ministry the Campus introduced a weekend program
called Day of Hospitality in which groups of homeless people are welcomed
by various faith communities on Cape Cod for lunch and the afternoon. In
January, 2002, the Overnight of Hospitality program was begun to provide
an evening of spiritual retreat and overnight stay for small groups of people
who would otherwise have to spend the night at a large homeless shelter.
As of 2005 over 30 organizations in the area had joined in hosting these
events.
